Overview
The ACA is our globally-recognised chartered accountancy qualification. It’s designed to provide you with the professional skills and strategic insight you’ll need to make a real impact on today’s complex global economies. Many ICAEW chartered accountants become partners or financial directors, with 83% of FTSE 100 companies having an ICAEW Chartered Accountant on their board. You can start the ACA after completing an undergraduate degree in any subject. You don’t have to study accountancy, business or finance at university to start the ACA, because companies offering ACA training agreements are interested in graduates from a range of backgrounds. What’s involved The ACA offers a structured training and development programme with four integrated elements. With an emphasis on professional development and nurturing skills, the qualification covers far more than technical accountancy. It’s designed to develop leadership potential, and its content is reviewed annually to ensure you’re kept informed about the latest developments in finance, accounting and business. Here’s what you’ll be doing: - Practical work experience You need to record 450 days of relevant ‘on-the-job’ work experience during your period of approved training. If you have completed an internship or placement year with one of our authorised employers, you may be able to count up to 12 months’ experience towards your ACA training. - Ethics and professional curiosity Ethics and professional curiosity are an essential part of being a chartered accountant. You’ll follow a structured programme to ensure you know how to apply them – focusing on areas such as integrity, objectivity and independence. - Accountancy, finance and business modules There are 15 modules, each with its own computer-based exam. These modules are staged across three levels: the first introduces you to core concepts; the latter two build on your growing technical knowledge and experience. - Professional development Demonstrate your competence in seven key professional skills (such as communication, team working and decision-making) by providing examples from your work experience. Once you’ve qualified, the sky is the limit. Some ICAEW Chartered Accountants have ended up analysing the finances of fashion brands, advising charities on tax, shaping schools’ spending, and working on the boards of multinational consumer companies – all you have to do is take that next step in your career and apply.
