Overview
Project Engineer We are looking for a project shift engineer to work for our world wide raw material business in Port Talbot. The position exists to assist and be responsible to the Senior Engineer for providing an efficient service in the design, procurement, installation and commissioning of various Projects, ensuring the application of the most up-to-date project engineering concepts throughout all stages of the projects undertaken. The pay for this position is £31.61 (PAYE) on a 36.5 hour week on a temporary 10 month contract. The Job Itself: Individual projects vary widely in terms of capital cost and engineering content, but it is normal that more than one (could be six or more) is handled at any one time, depending upon the workload in the department and the relative size and complexity of individual projects. Direct projects involve the procurement, design, installation and commissioning of operational plant in the Integrated Works. The job holder may functionally supervise several Design Engineers, Senior Designers and Designers, also the work of other Project Engineers are located to them if the workload requires it. He/she will functionally supervise contractor staff and Tata personnel. The final shift arrangements are to be confirmed, but it is likely to be 4 days on, 4 off working 12 hour shifts - a mixture of days and nights. The Role: The role will consist of the successful applicant supervising the ongoing work on the shift, tracking on-site progress of works, preparation of permitry, helping to support and resolve any Tata or contractor issues, drive work progress, liaise between the operations and the project, attend update meeting and shift handovers, prepare written reports of activities and progress, escalate any issues outside of shift for support, work with CDM facilitators on shift to support safety management. The job will consist of, but not be limited to, the following: Make recommendations for plant and equipment to meet the production and engineering requirements of the project at an economic cost consistent with sound engineering practices, incorporating the latest project engineering concepts. Liaise with other Project Engineering staff and prepare and present to Senior Project Engineer detailed schedules covering the project from placing of orders to final commissioning. To hold regular meetings in order to monitor progress. Ensure that sufficient information is available at the design stage of the project so that the installation, supporting services and commissioning activities can be adequately assured and performed. Provide practical advice in the initial design and layout stage of major developments initiated by Project Engineers for the Integrated Works, which may cover a number of projects at any one time. Plan, sequence and organise all operations associated with the project as regards timing, storage of equipment, agreeing of Plant Down times with management. Ensure that contractors' personnel/Tata Service Departments, etc. install equipment to schedule and to engineering specifications laid down and, where appropriate, ensure that manufacturing is conforming to specification. He/she is entitled to authorise variations to the contract within specification and budget limits, after consultation with Senior Engineer - Project & Design. Ensure the correct documentation is complete and payment invoices are submitted, and that all work on the project is carried out safely by monitoring the housekeeping and safety procedures in the area and methods of erection, installation and commissioning. The jobholder will attend regular progress meetings and prepare status reports, as required. Requirements/Personal Specification: Working knowledge of processes in the steel industry and an appreciation of the techniques, problems and standards associated with related engineering disciplines. The ability to resolve problems in a systematic and logical manner in times of great urgency, e.g. doing commissioning and post commissioning runs. HNC (or equivalent) in an appropriate discipline and preferably Corporate Membership of the appropriate Institution. Experience in Project/Design/Plant Engineering work.
