Mechanical Design Engineer Location: Reading / Basingstoke Area Package: £33,850 - £47,500 dependent on experience. AWE are looking for Mechanical Design Engineers to join existing teams responsible for the design, manufacture, assembly and testing of robust miniature weapon safety mechanisms, pressurised gas management systems, neutron generators and environmental sensing mechanisms. Currently the teams are made up of Engineers and Scientists and work together with our peers in the USA. Your role will be to develop capability and understanding of all aspects of these specialist products from the underpinning science through to the system qualification of these highly reliable clockwork-like devices, pressurised systems and force balanced accelerometers that can survive space flight and vehicle accidents. We have our own laboratories to support this mission. Applicants must have an understanding of mechanical design and specification with experience of use of design tools such CAD / CAE as well as product realisation and manufacturing techniques. Ideally previous experience of 3D solid modelling (Siemens NX, Solidworks etc) and generation of technical drawings including the use of GD&T, though further training will be provided. Though not to be considered a check list, candidates would also benefit from knowledge of ANY of the following: Design of gears, springs or joints with bearings Joining techniques - adhesives, welding, brazing etc Dry lubricants or other surface coatings PSSR, pressure vessel design codes or DSEAR Tolerance analysis Finite Element Analysis or Rigid Body Dynamics Designing and undertaking mechanical product tests to validate designs Electro-mechanical monitoring Small drive systems eg DC motors, solenoids, steppers or voice coils Small scale electro-magnetic design Fluid dynamics and simple hydraulic systems. Selection of materials based on requirements - particularly stainless steels Tooling, jigs and fixtures Human factors Designing to withstand challenging environments To be considered for these roles, ideally you will have an HNC/HND or degree qualification in an engineering discipline or proven experience working in a similar environment and possess strong communication skills.
