Overview

An attractive opportunity has arisen for a versatile and experienced grounds person to work at an award-winning family estate near York. You will be working in a 4-acre garden comprising herbaceous borders, orchard meadow, veg garden and woodland garden as well as on the wider estate looking after hedges, trees, building and infrastructure. Working both on your own and as part of a team, you will be required to carry out a wide variety of garden duties and estate maintenance in all weather conditions. The role requires the candidate to undertake general grounds maintenance duties including pedestrian and ride-on mowing, hedge cutting, leaf clearing, strimming, mulching, pruning, weed control both by hand and application of herbicides, border maintenance, planting. Experience of a wide range of machinery (i.e. blowers, mowers, hedge trimmers etc) is essential. As would skills in tree work, including the use of chainsaws and wood-chippers. The ideal candidate will have a full current driving license, preferably including a trailer license, as well as certificates in spraying (PA1/PA6), chainsaw operation (CS30/CS31) and have some experience in maintaining estate machinery. Previous relevant experience on a country estate in maintaining grounds and/or skilled outdoor labouring would be useful, as would experience with using heavy machinery. A basic knowledge of site health and safety is expected. Certificates and experience are desirable; however, training will be given to an enthusiastic, hard-working candidate. The job also requires some handyman skills and oth er light duties at the main private house. Living on-site is a condition of employment for this position. Rent will be at a subsidised rate.
