We are Primetals Technology, a world leader in metallurgical plant solutions, and we have a Design Engineer role which provides the opportunity to join our global business’ centre of competence for Blast Furnace Technology, based in Stockton-On-Tees. Reporting to the Engineering Design Manager, the successful Design Engineer will be responsible for the design of Blast Furnace Plant and Mechanical equipment and the development of new and existing Blast Furnace equipment. You will carry out concept design, design reviews and detail engineering of specific items of Blast Furnace equipment. Main Tasks & Responsibilities Produce, monitor and check that technically compliant and cost-effective design documentation; drawings, specifications, schedules, calculations, manuals etc. meet project requirements and company operating procedures / statutory obligations. Work with the lead engineer as the technical focus for a specific portion of a project ensuring a successful and commercially viable contract execution. This would include monitoring and reporting budgets, progress and change management. Develop and maintain a good working relationship with other departments, ensuring that design work meets with their needs and seeking ideas on particular products. Work with other engineers to develop specific products through concept design (mechanical), calculations, design reviews, detail engineering and onto a saleable product. Completing mechanical design and basic calculation work, working with senior engineers to carry out advanced calculations and analysis. Where required ensure that equipment is manufactured, tested, installed and commissioned in accordance with the design / operational requirements. Develop, maintain and cultivate relationships with clients, suppliers and sub-contractors to ensure successful execution of the project and assist towards future business. Flexibility to travel the world, occasionally at short notice and outside normal working hours. Required Education, Skills & Experience Ideally educated to degree level in mechanical engineering discipline although HNC / HND or other qualifications may be considered depending on experience. Experience gained in heavy industry, preferably in a Mechanical Design Engineering role. Equipment design skills, able to work alone or in groups to produce innovative, robust designs, built with both manufacture and operation in mind and suited to the harsh environment they will operate in. Design calculation ability, usually with ‘MathCAD’ or Microsoft Excel required. Basic 3D CAD skills (Preferably Autodesk Inventor), training available depending on experience. Working knowledge of environmental, health & safety and technical regulations. Must be able to solve problems quickly and positively. Take an active part in the decision making of the engineering team. Desirable Advanced 3D CAD skills (Preferably Autodesk Inventor). Demonstrable problem solving and analytical thinking skills. Experience of project engineering and the project lifecycle from contract award through to installation/commissioning from a specific disciplined engineering view. Experience of iron & steel industry.
