Overview
As a senior interaction designer, your job will be to lead the design of accessible public and internal digital services that are simple enough for everyone to use. You'll be excited by the challenge of creating digital services that work across multiple channels, devices, browsers and platforms and leading on the design and implementation of patterns and standards. Client Details The Planning Inspectorate has a long and proud history in ensuring a fair planning system by acting as the main appellate body for planning decisions in England and Wales. The judgements and decisions made by planning inspectors have a significant impact on the economy, people's lives and the communities in which they live. We've embarked on an ambitious programme of business change supported by a complete refresh of the systems that support our core business services. We are re-designing and creating new services across all channels, supported by modern technology that's transforming the way in which we deliver services to both our internal and external users. Description Senior Interaction Designer Create and iterate prototypes to test and communicate ideas and help the wider team learn about user needs. Work with a multidisciplinary team in an agile environment to turn concepts into user-centred designs. Ensure that the design of services is consistent, both internally and with the rest of GOV.UK, across multiple work streams. Understand user needs and designs services, products and tools to meet them. Manage team workload and design approach across deliverables. Understand as-is interaction design and identify improvement opportunities. Use typography and affordance to improve user experience. Deliver and promote best practices around user-centred design processes, user research and experience design. Identify and understand constraints and able to work within them. Work across both digital and non-digital platforms to create the best possible user experience. Understand the bigger picture (high-level flows and processes) as well as the fine detail of individual parts. Actively lead, support and mentor team members. Support the capability and promote interaction design in and beyond the department. Profile Senior Interaction Designer - Essential Criteria Demonstrable experience of user centred interaction design including sketching and workable prototypes. Extensive experience of prototyping in HTML & CSS. Extensive experience with a wide range of design software (e.g. Sketch, Creative Suite) Knowledge of accessibility guidelines and experience of ensuring that digital services are accessible to all users, including users with low digital skills. Experience of working in multidisciplinary teams to embed user-centred design practices and deliver continuous user research. Experience of applying Agile principles in practice. Experience of designing interactions professionally for the web and mobile in a range of design environments. Experience of leading and mentoring a team ensuring they reach their potential, conform to good practice and produce high designs. Experience of setting design standards and leading a team to implement them. Relevant degree or professional qualification (e.g. Subjects such as psychology, social sciences, human-computer interaction, human factors/ergonomics, anthropology or related fields) or willingness to study for a qualification within a reasonable length of time.
