Overview
The British Vehicle Rental & Leasing Association (BVRLA) is one of the UK's leading automotive trade associations. At the heart of the revolution in the way vehicles are powered, used and managed, our sector is transforming the way society thinks about road transport. BVRLA members own and operate more than five million cars, vans and trucks, and are responsible for nearly 50% of all new vehicles sold each year. They operate the cleanest and most technologically advanced fleet in the UK and need someone to tell their story. This is a fantastic opportunity to drive policy communications and stakeholder engagement for the BVRLA, campaigning principally in the area of decarbonisation and including electric vehicles, air quality, future mobility, road safety and consumer protection. You will ideally have proven experience gained through employment with a UK Political Party, the Civil Service, a Member of Parliament or a policy/public affairs post within another organisation. You will need excellent all-round communications skills, including the ability to present clear and compelling information to a variety of different audiences via reports, briefings, news articles, consultation responses, speeches and presentations. You will be one of two public affairs managers working in close partnership with two senior policy advisers. Key Tasks and Responsibilities: Government and stakeholder Relations Stimulate and promote awareness of the fleet industry to parliamentarians and key policymakers in national and local government Develop and manage relationships with influential MPs, Government departments and special advisers and a diverse range of industry stakeholders Coordinate lobbying activities on behalf of BVRLA members to address potential threats and/or opportunities raised by political stakeholders Maintain and implement a public affairs and stakeholder engagement strategy, with a particular focus on transport decarbonisation, tax and motor finance Work on a day-to-day basis with BVRLA's appointed external public affairs agency to ensure consistent and joined-up narratives regarding the execution of the agreed policy and communication objectives Monitor political and policy developments of interest to the BVRLA Represent the BVRLA and its members at a variety of workshops, roundtables, committees, conferences and other sector or member-based events Policy Communications Work with colleagues in the Policy and Public Affairs team to develop a suite of core policy messages and collateral for use across a range of different channels, with a particular focus on transport decarbonisation, taxation and motor finance Support policy advocacy by managing the production of a range of external policy-related materials Provide written and oral reports to update BVRLA colleagues and members across a range of policy priorities, with a particular focus on transport decarbonisation, taxation and motor finance Responsible for co-ordinating and overseeing the smooth implementation of policy related events including Parliamentary receptions and drop-in events, regional workshops and Ministerial briefings Policy Research & Insight Work with BVRLA's Research & Insight Manager to initiate, coordinate and distribute a range of policy research and data analysis to underpin the BVRLA's core policy messages and campaigns Professional Requirements: Degree level or equivalent education Strong experience working in public affairs engagement, perhaps gained in another trade association, public affairs consultancy, think-tank, government department or regulator environment A deep understanding of the national and local policy-making and political process in the UK, ideally with some experience of working in the transport, environment, business or energy environments Shrewd observer of the political scene in the UK and EU, with the ability to identify issues that may impact member interests in good time to take effective action Capacity to understand and lobby on highly technical issues Experience in running public policy campaigns Excellent writing skills, including spelling, punctuation and grammar Experience of policy research and analysing and using government statistics Excellent presentation skills in one-to-one and group situations Effective time-management skills Ability to manage own diary and workload Person Specification: Excellent organiser and planner - can handle several projects simultaneously Maintains high ethical standards both personally and professionally; shows integrity and is reliable and trustworthy particularly in relation to supporting members Keen attention to detail - makes rational, realistic and sound decisions based on consideration of all the facts and alternatives available Ability to grasp new concepts, absorb large amounts of information, and disseminate this in a clear and succinct manner, both written and orally Establishes and maintains constructive and open relationships with a wide range of people, achieving positive shared outcomes and sharing feedback Produces high quality written communications, which are clear, concise and designed for different audiences Confident public speaker and networker Other job requirements: This job location will be split 50:50 between London and the BVRLA offices in Amersham
