Summary: Facebook is actively seeking software engineers to help build and scale our rapidly evolving media infrastructure. We are looking for software engineers with a passion for visual media, particularly images and photos with an aptitude for building innovative solutions to today's largest, toughest problems. As a member of this core team, you will be in charge of designing, improving and implementing how we encode, decode, store, compress, represent, prepare and distribute images throughout Facebook. In addition to software development, your duties may involve evaluating third party and open source software, interacting with various other Engineering teams and working with hardware vendors and industry panels. This is a full-time position. Required Skills: 1. Provide technical leadership for the immediate team as we adopt AVIF 2. Establish yourself as the pre-eminent image format and codec authority within Facebook (stretch goal!) 3. Define what AVIF adoption means for each app, surface and service, including: 1) Optimizations that can be made for each use case whether those are device-class specific or image type specific (e.g. profile photos, news feed images, story tray etc...) 2) Backend transcoding, CDN warming and other efficiencies 4. Collaborate with internal and external partners to evangelise AVIF adoption 5. Software codec selection based on efficiency, overhead and other parameters, including: Creating a codec selection model for the continuous evaluation of new software codec setups that arise 6. Optimisation of existing codec suites Minimum Qualifications: 7. Demonstrable recent experience with one or more image or video formats (e.g. JPEG, AV1, h264 etc...) 8. Familiarity with the constraints on encoding and decoding on resource-limited devices such as mobile phones 9. Understands how and when to make trade offs within image processing pipelines and how to communicate the risks, side-effects and impact of these decisions on users and other constituents Preferred Qualifications: 10. Peer reviewed papers on encoding, compressing, transforming and/or other optimisation techniques 11. Significant contributions to open source projects such as FFMPEG 12. BSc or MSc in Computer Science or related field (or equivalent industry experience) Industry: Internet
